What to look forward to!
Report Date: December 21, 2004
Well I have to say the weather got the best of us this week. It decided to get real cold it got down to 38 degrees and with the wind chill it felt like 20 degrees. It looks like the fallowing week is about the same. I think this is the type of weather were are going to be seeing a lot of throw the next couple of months.
We did manage to get one day of fishing in. It was the day after all of the
cold fronts. The water temp dropped about 6 degrees since the last day I had fished. We found a lot of Snook and Red fish but we could not get these fish to feed. Which with that big of a temp change in the water it can make it tough to get the fish to feed. This time of year the fish do a lot of moving around. We did not have much luck getting the Snook or Red fish to bite but we did manage to get the Jacks and Lady fish in a frenzy and we caught about 20 of each. Some of the Jacks were real nice about 15 lbs on the light tackle, this fish put up one heck of a fight. Then we have the lady fish or ? Poor Mans Tarpon?. These fish are fun you hook them and they do nothing but jump all over the place.
What to look forward to over the next month as far as the back water fishing goes? We will mostly be fishing for Red fish, Sheepshead, Trout, and Jacks. Most of all this fishing will be around the rivers and places were you can find warmer water. Some of the areas that are real good to fish are around structures and off some of the grass flats close to the rivers. Most of the fishing that we are doing is with Shrimp, or frozen baits.
Then we have the near shore fishing,
if the weather will allow us to get out there. This time of year the fish move in a lot closer, you do not have to run as far off shore to catch fish. Most of the fishing that we are doing is inside 12 miles which is just a short run. The Grouper and Snapper bite has been pretty good. We just have not had too many chances to get out there. But with the water temp the fishing off shore has been good. You just have to pick the days to go when the weather will cooperate.
Don?t forget it is time to start booking those trips for the new season. If it is Snook, Red fish, or Trout that your interested in catching with live bait, it will just have to get a little warmer. Usually it starts to warm up around Feb. If it is like the last few years, we start to catch the fish on the flats again. Then March comes and we usually start catching Tarpon again!!! But till then most of the fishing with live bait that we will be doing will be for Sheepshead, Trout, and a few Red fish. That is unless you want to get some artificial lures and fish for some Snook up in the rivers. The other choice is the near shore fishing for Grouper or Snapper.
