Rough, tough, but successful!
Report Date: September 27, 2004
Most of the week the weather was pretty good then toward the end of the week our once weak hurricane came threw. This one gave us the worst weather that we have had from this hurricane season so far. The great thing is that before and maybe a couple of days after it might be rough to fish, But it has not slowed the fishing down maybe people don?t want to go but the fishing has been great!
I will start with the Snook fishing it
is awesome and it just keeps getting better. With the weather the water temp has gone down. It is fluctuating around 80 degrees With this the Snook start moving back to the rivers and flats, and the Snook are feeding like crazy. The size of the bait has increased a little bit too which makes it a little easier to fish with the bait and get the fish to feed. We have had trips where alright your going to think I am kidding but we have caught over 50 Snook! The reason for this is that when Snook get in big schools you can get them into a feeding frenzy and catch a large number of fish. .
Then we have the Red fish. The bite has stayed about the same. We have caught large numbers of these Red fish the last couple of weeks. This week the Red fish bite was ok I can?t say slow because we caught 10-15 fish or more each trip. But we did not get to do a whole lot of fishing for the Red fish with the Snook fishing being so good. Most of the fish we caught this week were 18-25 inches. This has been about the same over the last couple of weeks.. We have had a few days where the schools of Red fish that we were catching were bigger like in the 25-30+ range. If you are looking for a fish to take home and eat, one of the 18-25 inch Red fish is perfect. The Red fish bite through the next
month should stay about the same. As the water temp goes down it usually moves the big schools of Red fish around but that means you just have to work a little harder to find the fish.
Last but certainly not least we have the Tarpon fishing. Yes we did manage to do some. It was a little rough but we had a successful trip. First I started by getting up about 3 am which was a little early but bait has been tough to catch.. I did manage to get some really nice shiners. I had to work hard but it was worth it. I picked up the people about 6 am and we went up into the Tampa bay and anchored up on one of my
favorite rock piles before the sun came up. It was rough as you can see in the picture. The important part was the fish did not care they were hungry. We managed to hook four Tarpon before we landed about a 100 lb. Silver King. With the Tarpon we had a lot of action. We caught Grouper, Flounder, Cobia, Blue fish, and a few other fish that broke off before we got to see them which were either Mackerel, or Sharks. In the next couple of months the rock piles in the bay will be producing a lot of fish. To see more come visit my web site www.castawaychartersinc.com!
