Tarpon Fishing Is A Little Off!

Report Date: July 9, 2013

Tampa Bay's tarpon season has been interesting this year. The season seems to be running a bit late this year. It is July, but with the way the fish are acting, it seems more like May. I believe the water temperature and rainy weather are playing a bit part in what the tarpon are doing. Some bigger fish are showing up over the past week. We even caught a few that were over 150 pounds. Another factor that is slowing the tarpon bite down is the amount of large sharks in the area. I think the fish are almost afraid to bite. Recently, we've had many fish that we've just hooked be chased by sharks. On the other hand, the shark bit has been awesome lately. If you want to catch a shark, now is the time to do it.

The redfish and snook bite has been fairly good lately. Some days I've had to work pretty darn hard to get the bait to catch them. However, that should change soon. Small bait has shown up in the area. As the bait gets bigger, it will become much easier to catch.

Overall, the Bay fishing has been really good. I am looking forward to being able to catch some nice Grouper when the season opens this month.
