Tampa Bay Spring Is Coming!

Spring is almost here and the fish are feeling it. It seems like more and more fish are starting to show up on the flats lately. Spring is one of my favorite times of the year to fish because every day is a bit different. It doesn’t really matter if it is morning or afternoon; the fish are biting all day everyday. You just have to work with the tides and the water temperature to get on a great bite.
The redfish bite has been great on some days and not so great on others. We have managed to catch a few redfish each trip.
Most of the fish we’ve caught have been in the slot, which is 18 inches to 27 inches long. Every once in a while we’ve had a bull redfish mixed in the bag. Last week, we did catch a few redfish that were in the 30 plus inch range. If the water temperature comes up a few more degrees the fish will really turn on. The fish that we have been catching have been in really shallow water, looking for warmer water.
Let’s talk about a great bite…the trout and snook bite has been phenomenal. The snook, much like the redfish, have been in the really shallow water looking for warmer water. The trick to catching these fish is spending some time quietly getting in a spot that is shallower than the area where the fish are. We haven’t had any trouble catching a number of these great fish.
Most of the fish we’ve caught are ranging from 22 inches to 27 inches. Currently, snook are out of season so you can’t keep them; however, they will be back in season in March. Just because they are out of season doesn’t mean that you can’t have a lot of fun catching and releasing them.
Trout, on the other hand, are in season. We’ve managed to catch the limit of trout each trip and have had a lot of fun while doing so. Most of these fish are ranging from 15 inches to 22 inches, with most being more toward 22 inches. This fish, like the others, will just keep getting better as spring approaches.
