Tampa bay waters are gettting warmer!

Report Date: April 1, 2008

Fishing is right on track for this time of the year. It has been awesome and it should just keep getting better. The weather last week was the best weather so

far this spring. The wind finally calmed down a bit last week. I don’t think it blew over 10 miles per hour, which has been a big change from the past month. I guess the million dollar question I posed to you in one of my past reports of is the wind ever going to stop blowing has finally been answered. It sure was nice not to have to search for a cove to fish in order to get out of the wind. Just keep your fingers crossed that the wind stays down over the next month. We all know that April certainly can be windy at times, but normally, it isn’t too bad.

Let’s talk about tarpon! To date, tarpon fishing has been great this year. So far, we have caught more tarpon this season than in the past. If that is any indication for what’s yet to come, the rest of tarpon season is going to be excellent. We should be able to catch all the tarpon we desire at just about any given time. As you can see in the picture, we caught a few nice tarpon last week. Keep in mind, that the pictures only show the few we managed to catch, not the many we lost. I guess that is why this sport is called fishing and not catching. If I was a guessing man, I would venture to say that the big tarpon have probably been hooked before. Therefore, they know the tricks to do and they do them to get off the hook.

The snook is next! Unfortunately, we have lost our share of big snook over the past week. However, we did catch some great numbers of fish last week with many of them just pushing the limit of being keepers. We had a number of fish in the 26 to 27 inch range, which is a great fish. These fish were roughly 4 to 5 lbs each. In order to keep a snook, the fish has to be between 28 to 33 inches long, and we certainly did have a few that fell in that range last week. Even if they are not keepers, snook are a lot of fun to catch and release. Last week I had my firs fly fisherman of the season and he caught roughly 12 snook on the fly.

The trout

bite is on! It hasn’t been tough to catch a limit of trout lately. We are still catching a few bigger fish mixed in others. As last week went on, we had to catch more numbers of fish to get the limit of the fish. We had to catch 2 to 3 fish before catching a keeper.

Last but not least, redfish! Schools of redfish were definitely showing up more and more last week, and we caught some really great numbers of fish. It all depends on the school of fish that you are targeting. In some schools, many of the fish are all over sized with a few smaller

fish mixed in, than in other schools, all the fish are keeper sized with a big fish or two mixed in. The size limit with the redfish is 18 to 27 inches, so it’s not too hard of a range to hit. We fished a redfish tournament last weekend, and caught a lot of fish. Many of the fish were too big to keep; however, we did catch two really great fish that won the tournament. We won first place in the tournament and also the biggest fish award. The biggest fish was a redfish that weighed in at 7.65lbs. The tournament is a series, so I’m looking forward to the next one in a few weeks. Please visit www.castawaychartersinc.com and book your trip today.
