Full moon fishing!

Report Date: November 30, 2007

Fishing around a full moon can be a bit tough sometimes. The most recent full moon brought out some great fish except the day where the wind was coming out of the north. When the wind came out of the north, the fish scattered out a little. With the fish feeding at night and the wind not allowing us to fish in the areas where the fish are made it a bit tough. When a front is coming through, the wind usually blows north for a day or two. Just because the fishing is a little tougher didn’t mean that we stayed at the dock. We still fished many days. One of the good things about windy days is that it keeps most people off the water so we were able to pick any spot to fish without other boats surrounding us.

The Snook bite

didn’t slow down to much last week. There is a lot of fish still around and we caught some nice sized ones too. We didn’t have a ton of big fish to go home but we did manage to hook a far share of really nice fish. We’ve dropped down in leader size because the water has been so clear, which means that we hooked, but didn’t land, the bigger fish. If you don’t get a 28 inch plus fish hooked right in the corner of the moth with 20 lb leader you don’t stand much of a chance of landing this great fish. It’s really surprising what 5 lbs of more test will stand up to, but at the same time, the less bites it gets. I have always said that you have to hook the fish before worrying about losing it. Most of the bigger fish we had this week were 26-27 inches, which is just out of slot. There is going to be a good number of fish this next season that will become the slot size.

Most of the

Red fish push off shore to spawn, but many of the slot sized fish or smaller fish stay in the bay so there is still Red fish in the bay to catch. With a straight north wind these fish are some times harder to catch because the areas they are in are just hard to fish with the north wind. It is looking like the weather might stay in the mid 80’s next week so will see what the bites like next week after the full moon.
