The chase is on!
Report Date: June 18, 2007
Summertime is in full effect! The weather is hot and so is the fishing. We’ve had to change the fishing up from time to time, but over all, it has been
awesome. This year is different than past years in many ways. To sum it up… the fishing season has been late this year. The biggest factor we’ve had to deal with lately has been the water temperature. It took so long to get up to where it normally is this time of year and it put fish in areas where aren’t normally. It also made them feed at times when you would think they wouldn’t. That is why they call it fishing and not catching.
Let’s start this week off with the Trout. The numbers were great last week. We caught a fish that was over 25 inches, which is a great Trout. If you put your mind to it, you can catch a great number of fish about any given time. At least, you catch a nice mess of fish to take home for dinner.
Now on to the Snook! What a bite these fish put on for us over the past few weeks. Most of these fish have been 20-30 inches in size, which on light tackle is a blast to catch. If you chum them up they bite like crazy and every time your bait hits the water you catch a fish. Here lately it seems like afternoon fishing for the Snook has been a little better because of the tide.
Red fish, Red fish, Red fish! Although we caught Red fish everyday last week, it wasn’t quite the bite that it was the week before last. The bite changed mostly because of the tide, which is going to take
another turn in the next couple of weeks. We are going to start getting afternoon showers. Like I have said in a few of the past reports there is a lot of Red fish up in the rivers still. Once we get some rain, they will get pushed out so hold on because they are coming!
The great silver kings are showing up! They are showing up in the bay off the beach. Over the past few weeks we have fished the Professional Tarpon Tournament Series in Boca Grande, Florida. We had a good size fish on during the tournament, but we weren’t able to get him to the boat. We have had some trips pre- fishing for the tournament where we had better luck though. That is the way the chase for the great silver kings goes! I do have one interesting story
from last week. If I hadn’t seen it with my own two eyes, I would have never believed it. We hooked up in the Boca Grande pass with a big Tarpon that was over 175lbs. This was a nice fish and it put up a great fight. We fought this fish for about 55 minutes before the Tarpon pulled us out of the pass about a half a mile. A Hammerhead shark came out of the water and tried to eat our Tarpon. The Shark was at least 18 feet long. I know you think I’m crazy but it was at least ¾ of the boat length and we were in a 26 footer. I have never seen anything like it before and I can only tell you about it because I didn’t get a chance to get a picture. I will however keep the visual in my mind for a long time!
