Rough but just right!

Report Date: October 25, 2006

Well let me see this week was kind of an interesting week slash weekend. Man I will tell you the weather has been a little crazy but it fits this time of year. Usually this time of year we start to have a lot of cold fronts and the fish do a lot of moving around.

I will start this off with the Snook fishing, it’s still been pretty good. We had

some days where it has been a little slower but that is because the water temp dropped. When you get one of the cold fronts moving through the pressure change from the front will affect the fish but one of the big things is with the cooler weather the shallow water on the flats will cool down quickly. Last week after one of those fronts that we had the water temp dropped 15 degrees this is a big change. Once it warms up a little the fishing kicks off again and the fish are even more hungry because they have not eaten for a couple of days. So we have had some very good days between the fronts. A lot of the Snook are starting to move back up the rivers this time of year so a good area to fish is around the mouths of the rivers and in them. A lot of the great fish can be caught around structure and areas were the water moves good.

Then its goes to the everything fishing or more like the Trout fishing.

With the cooler weather this has not been effected as much. As long as the bait stays in the bays these fish will stay there as well. We have started catching some bigger Trout mixed in with all of the other fish, Mackerel, Grouper, Blue fish, Lady fish, Jacks, and a few others. One of the other fish that we started catching a lot with the cooler weather is Flounder. We have had a few really nice ones over the past couple of weeks. To catch these fish like the Trout you want to be fishing off the edges of the flats most of the time. We catch a lot of these where the grass meets the sand maybe a little more on the sand. Another good spot is where hard bottom like rocky areas meet the sand. Usually most of the fish are caught on the sand. They usually sit on the sand and wait for baits coming from the rocks or the grass.

Then we have the Red fish, like the Snook these fish will turn on and off with the cold fronts. We have had some great days and then a few that have been a little slower. Most of them we have been able to find a few

of these fish to eat and pull some drag. I can tell you one thing about the Red fish when the water temp starts to cool down the fish start to slow down. With this we will start using baits that are a little slower as well. Usually you will start using shrimp or artificial lures when it’s too cold but not yet we should have a month or more left with the live bait. We did have a good weekend with the Red fish it was a little rough getting from spot to spot. We were in a tournament and the weather was not the nicest. But we did manage to get a Red fish that was over 7 lbs which was a nice fish. We had a few that were a little bigger but in this tournament the fish had to be 18-27 inches. The fish that we caught was 26 ½ inches a very nice slot fish that we managed to get first place for the biggest Red fish.

Then it comes to the great Tarpon. Well there are some fish up in the bay around the great Skyway and a few other places. But of course there is always that but. We just have not been out and had any more time to try to fish for them. It has ether been to rough or the guys didn’t want to fish for them. So hopefully by the next report I will be able to tell you different!
