Doesn't get any better!

Report Date: September 19, 2006

Well the fish are biting. This week I got to doing some fishing way up in the bay about 45 minutes north of the Skyway. We had a lot of luck and even more fun. We fished a tournament with the Tampa Bay Lightning Hockey Team. We managed to do pretty good. I pre fished up there one day as well with a lot of luck. You will have to read on to get the details.

I will start this report with the Snook fishing it’s been very good. The season has opened now well that is just that you can keep them, you can still catch them any time of the year. We have had a few early nice fish over the past few weeks. Most of the fish we have been catching have been the schools of fish and most of these fish are 20-26 inches. Which on the light tackle are a blast, and you can usually catch a big number of fish when you get into a school of fish this size. Some times you will get that big fish out of the school. This is where most of our bigger fish have come from so far this year. As it starts to get cooler the bigger fish that are out in the bay will start moving up in the rivers. This is when we have a lot of luck catching some really nice fish.
Then let’s go to the Trout

fishing this has been a little tough not because the fish are not there. The biggest reason that we have had a hard time catching the Trout lately is because all of the other fish have been hitting too quick. We have been catching all kinds of stuff Grouper, Mackerel, Jacks, Blue fish, Snapper, and some others. If you are having a slow day of fishing just go out and look for some of the big schools of bait on the flats If you fish around them this is where we have had our most luck catching all different species.

Tarpon well there are still some fish way up in the river this is the little fish that we have been having a lot of fun with on the light tackle. We have just not had much time to get up there and fish for them. There are a few big fish hanging around but when I have seen these fish I have not had tackle to fish for them. With the light stuff we would not stand a chance.
Then I will go to the Red fish, man oh man this is what we had most of our luck in the tournament with. We caught some great Red fish last week. Over the past few weeks we have had a lot more luck with the Red fish. A couple of months ago if you would have run over a big school of Red fish don’t waste your time trying to go back to catch them because they were so scared they would not

bite. That is where it has been different the past few weeks. When you find a big school of fish make sure you have plenty of bait so you can get these fish into a frenzy. The day of the tournament this is what we managed to do. We caught Red fish for about 3 hours straight. As quick as you could get the bait in the water you had a fish on! Not just a fish but a big one at that! Most of the fish were 28-33 inches. Which you can only imagine what they did to that light tackle. I’ll say one thing that young man that I had in the boat was going just as hard as the rest of the guys. As you can see in the pictures they had a lot of fun. But they did very well in the tournament as well. The one hockey player managed to win first place with a 33 inch Red fish. The young man and his father both had 33 inch Red fish as well and they managed to take second and third place in their division. Which was awesome they were a lot of fun and can’t wait till next time. I managed to win the captains award for having a good day of fishing which was pretty neat as well because there were over 35 captains fishing. Well hope to see you on the water soon!
