Fishy fishy fishy!
Report Date: January 25, 2006
Well it decided to get a little warmer for a little bit but not quite long enough. Well we have still been able to get the fish to bite. Well it did get warm enough for the fish to stick their heads out of the rivers in the mouth of the bays. The water temp has managed to get up to 68 degrees in this warm spell.
I will start this with the most action or I should say the most action that we have had back in the bay and that is the Sheepshead fishing. We have had really good days on most of the charters that I have had we have had a lot of luck with the Sheepshead fishing.. The biggest trouble that we have had with the Sheepshead fishing is the water clarity, yes believe it or not the water is too clear. You can see all the Sheepshead around the docks or structures but they will not bite. We have tried to drop down in leader size hook size no luck so one off the biggest things to look for is some dirtier water. I will give you one good hint and that is when you drive around on the days where the water is really clear remember where you saw the fish then go back when the water is dirtier and catch them. All the sheepshead fishing that we have been doing has been with live shrimp.. We have had a lot of nice Sheepshead over the last few weeks but the biggest have been around 5 lbs. Let me tell you that a 4-5 lb sheepshead will give up a really good fight!
Back in the bay with the Sheepshead we have been catching a few other types of fish like Drum, Snapper, Pompano, and mostly Red fish. Most of these fish we have been catching have been with shrimp. Most of the Snapper we have been catching have been up in the river other then the fish off shore. Some days up in the river the Snapper have been good size and other days real small. As far as the Pompano go we had the most luck with them using shrimp as well but if you find these fish and have no luck with Shrimp try jigs yellow or white is what we have had most of our luck with. Then it comes to the Red fish we have been doing good with Shrimp but that is not because you can not catch them on artificial. This is the prime time of the year for this type of fishing. Most of the time with the artificial bait the fish are a little bigger but we have managed to catch some nice fish on Shrimp.
Then we have the off shore fishing, this has picked up or at least we have had a
chance to get out there and do a little off shore fishing. The biggest bite has been the Snapper we have had a lot of luck. The Grouper bite has been off and on some days we had a lot of luck catching a lot of Grouper and other days it?s a little slower but each trip we have managed to catch some good fish. If we get some good weather next week we are going to get out a little further. Most of the fishing that we have been doing is about 8-12 miles out but we got out about 15-20 miles and had one really good day so I think that we are going to try to get out a little further.
