In an Off!
Report Date: August 15, 2005
Well it certainly got hot! That is the fishing and the weather. The last couple of weeks the weather has been beautiful. This time of year you do get the afternoon showers but usually we are off the water by then.
We changed things up a little this past week and did a few offshore trips. Each of these trips was a little different some we
went a good ways out and the others not quite as far. To start with let?s talk about the Grouper. We had a few nice Grouper each trip and I don?t want to start talking about the fish that got away. One of the trips we managed to get into some Amber Jacks that were about 25 lbs and if you have ever caught these you know you?ve got your hands full. The most luck we had was with the Snapper fishing it was awesome. We managed to catch a number of these fish each trip with
most of these fish being really nice size 3-5 lbs. The Grouper of the week was a 15 lb fish and the Snapper of the week was pushing 7 lbs two very nice fish.
Then we come back to the bay this fishing has been very good as well. I will start with the Red fish. We have managed to get these fish into a frenzy a few times in the past week. Most of the Red fish that we have been catching have been in the 20-24 inch range. All of these trips we have been using live bait and catching it a few time during
the day. This is because the bait has moved in on the flats and is easy to catch at times. With the Red fish we have been doing a lot of chumming so you will go through a lot of bait. The Red fish of the week was a 30 inch fish.
If we have had trouble getting the Red fish to bite we made up for it with the Snook fishing. These fish are still in their summer locations which is in the passes or locations where the water usually moves real good. If you can catch a good moving tide and find these fish you can usually get them into
a frenzy. Just like the Red fish it is nice to have a lot of bait so that you can do a lot of chumming to keep the fish feeding. The Snook of the week was a 29 inch fish. We only have one more month before they come back in to season so set up your Snook trips now!
Tarpon, this has been one of the strangest seasons I have ever seen. But I guess this has a lot to due with the Red tide. In the past week we had some fish show back up on the beach starting to move to the North which make sense this time of year so hopefully we will have a really good fall with the great fish. We did manage to get out on the beach one day last week and hooked into a fish that was pushing 150 lbs. A big fish that put up a great fight before it managed to take the glory from us. We did manage to fish for the small Tarpon last week and hooked a couple but no luck getting them to the boat as well. But I hope to make up for the Tarpon fishing in the fall if it will go back to how it should be.
