The one that almost got away!
Report Date: May 23, 2005
Well here we are with another great week of fishing to talk about. I will start with the weather it was awesome, and the fishing was right there with it too. We had a few days where it was a little breezy but nothing like it has been and it did not make it too rough to do any type of fishing.
Let?s start with the Trout fishing. Lately it has been real easy to get these fish into a frenzy and catching a large number of them. To catch these fish we were using live Shiners. One of the key things to look for is where the bait is congregating on the flats
and park your boat so you are fishing close to where the bait is moving. If you catch enough bait where you can chum this will help get the fish more active. But here lately the Trout fishing has been so good you can just about call it catching!
Then we have the Snook fishing. These fish are starting to get around the locations where they usually spend their summers. These fish are out of season this time of year but can still be fun to catch and release. We have not been doing a whole lot of Snook fishing lately but that is not because they have not been bitting we have just been chasing the other species around. We did have one great Snook of the week this week it was a fish 34 inches long.
We have had a lot of luck with Red
fish lately. Most of these fish have been caught on the shallow flats in the bays. On the higher tides you want to be fishing around the mangroves or under. Then when the tide starts to head out these fish start moving off the flats and this is when you want to start fishing in the white holes that are off the edge of the flats. This is like the Trout fishing where you like to have a lot of live bait so that you can do some chumming to work these fish into a frenzy. Most of the Red fish that we have been catching have been in the 18-27 inch range with a few Bull Reds mixed in. The Red fish of the week was a 31 ? inch fish.
Tarpon, Tarpon and more Tarpon, they have finally decided to show up. I know I can say this because we had a really great week. We managed to boat a fish every trip that we Tarpon fished. We hooked a few each trip but we did manage to get at least one back to the boat each trip.. Like the other fishing we have been using live bait for these fish you just have to try to find big baits. A lot of the fishing that we have been doing has been up in Tampa Bay around the Sky way bridge but there are fish starting to show up on the beach now as well. Last week we started with a bang and boated a Tarpon that was a 150 lb fish and he put up quite a fight. The young ladies that caught this fish did a great job. But this was not the biggest Tarpon of the week we managed to boat another fish that was probably over 200 lbs. It was a huge fish that we fought for over 2 hrs. Check out the pictures.
