Just about time!
Report Date: February 21, 2005
Well we have been waiting and it is just starting. I am talking about fishing with live bait. The bait is starting to show up on the flats and the fish are eating the live baits. With the cooler mornings you might want to start with artificial then once it warms up go to the live bait.
Let?s start with the Trout fishing. When you can find the fish you can get them to eat the live bait. Most of these fish are on the edges
of the bars and in some of the white holes close to the edges. If it is a little cold in the morning you might want to put a little split shot on the line to get the bait down. Some times this will help slow the baits down and the Trout can catch the bait easier. If you do not have luck with that try putting a popping cork on. We have been catching a lot of Trout. Some days there are a lot of small fish but then you have days that just about every fish you catch is a keeper. The Trout of the week was a 21 inch fish.
Then we have the Red fish .Most of the fish that we have been catching has been on artificial bait . Well
that is until the last few days when they started eating the live baits again. Overall this past week most of the Red fish we caught has been on artificial bait, we have been using a lot of jigs. When you use jigs throw them as far away from the boat and do a real slow retrieve bumping along the bottom. If you get a cooler morning you want to start with the jigs then go to the live bait once it warms up a little. With the live bait you can do the same as far as putting a weight on the line to slow the bait down. The Red fish of the week was a 25 inch fish.
Then we have the Snook fishing. They are starting to show up on the flats again. Most of these fish we?ve been catching have been on live bait but we have caught some of these fish on artificial as well. This time of the year the fish are starting to move out of the rivers so fishing for Snook
is usually good around the mouths of the rivers or the flats surrounding the rivers. The Snook of the week was a great fish it was 33 inches and we caught this fish on a jig.
We can?t forget about the Grouper and Snapper fishing. Well that is if the weather will let you get out and do it. The wind has been bad and makes it difficult to get out there. We did have one day we got out there and the Grouper got the best of us. We caught a lot but the big ones got away. We got broke off about 10 times but we did catch a lot of Snapper.
