Tampa Bay – Bradenton – Sarasota – Boca Grande

It's over but just started!

It doesn’t get much better!!! Well, that is both the weather and the fishing! We’ve had to do a little more work to catch some of the fish lately because the tides last week weren’t the best. Over all, we managed to catch a lot of fish each day. It was more work because I had to do a lot of push poling around the flat. Each spot that we stopped we would catch a few fish then they would move just out of reach so we would have to move the boat a little. With more moving water these fish would stay in an area, but with the tide so slow, you just have to move a little to keep with the fish.

Tarpon… We didn’t get a chance to do much fishing over the past week for these great fish. We started off the week with one but this was the only chance of seeing a Tarpon all week. It was short lived. We anchored up, put the first rod in the water, and had a bite in about 30 seconds. The fish jumped twice before he managed to through the hook. It was a nice Tarpon - I would say 125lbs or better. We did have a few more bites but we never put another fish in the air. This was my only Tarpon trip this week.

The Snook fishing this past week was proudly the best week of Snook fishing so far this year.

We’ve had big numbers and the size too. We started the week off with 20-plus fish with a limit of keepers and some that were in the slot, which is 27-34 inches. This was the start - we managed to catch just as much or more fish the rest of the week. I can say this was a lot of fun for the guys because Snook was the fish they wanted to catch the most. Because they fished three days in a row, they managed to catch a lot of Snook! Only a few more days left in Snook season before it closes for awhile. This doesn’t mean that you can’t catch them… you just can’t keep them. This is when you start really catching some great fish because there isn’t so much pressure on the fish like there has been over the past few weeks before the season closes. Not saying that we had much trouble - we had a lot of luck!

Redfish… We’ve had to work a little for them last week because the tide was different.

We had to work more for the Redfish than any other fish because you have to be so quiet. With the tide not moving this can be tough. What would happen is we would get to the spot catch a few of the Redfish then they would get just out of casting distance we would pull the anchor pole 20-30 feet being very quiet catch a few more then have to do it again. The most important part is that we were catching them. Another thing that I can recommend is to have a lot of bait to chum these fish up. This will help you catch more fish. We did have a lot of great fish this week and most of them were in the slot. Of course we did have a few that stuck out way over that limit!
